Grain Storage

Coastal Grains celebrated its twenty fifth anniversary in 2007. Since its foundation in 1982 it has played a major role in the storage and marketing of combinable crops in Northumberland and the Borders on behalf of its farmer members.

Welcome to Coastal Grains - Northumberland's largest grain co-operative

It has developed from nothing to being the largest co-operative central store outside East Anglia. Initial response from farmers was encouraging and so in 1982 the then 12-strong membership started building. Membership now stands at 102, stretching from Reston in the north to Durham in the south; Rothbury and Kelso in the west.

Major plant upgrade began in 2009

Coastal Grains continues to hold to its central commitment of providing its members with the best quality facilities for drying and handling their crops. Now with all three new driers installed we are able to dry up to 240 tonnes of grain per hour. The new cutting-edge laboratory means that grain can be tested fast and accurately. The upgraded laboratory facilities are all about quality control and ensure that Coastal Grains’ testing and specifications coordinate with its buyers. Users are looking to procure product from homogeneous grain storage which co-operative central stores are capable of providing. Grain standard is similar time after time. Buyers are getting a known specification and a product that they can set their equipment to and know that they are obtaining the same product consistently.

The Svegma 6m drier was installed in 2010 is rated at 80 tonnes/hour, it can remove 5% moisture at 100 ºC, nominally 100 tonne/hour on feed wheat

Project part financed by the European Union European Regional Development Fund 2007-13.

Latest Developments

2015 saw an extra 20'000 tonnes of storage built in the form of four 5000 tonne silos which were erected on the old cricket pitch site. Photos of the new silos can be seen in the gallery.
